Live: Shearwater and Hospital Ships

Last Sunday the aroma of espresso creations hung in the air while Shearwater tuned up and prepared for their set at Cafe 939 at Berklee. The slightly crowded stage barely held all five musicians and their abundant instruments. The anticipation from the crowd was evident in every twitch and shuffle. Having never seen Shearwater before, I was not prepared for the performance to come. From the first note sung to the last chord played I was bewitched by frontman Jonathon Meiburg's otherworldly voice. This lyrically experimental group incorporates an array of instruments that include banjo, trumpet, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and even a wind piano. The layers of sound all fit harmoniously together in each song.Standing on the side lines watching each musician I saw the passion they had in their music. I witnessed it in each plucked string of a guitar and each blow of the trumpet. These talented musicians have a great deal of potential with their unplanned inspirations that turn into the lyrics that hook you. You’ll catch yourself swaying back and forth with the music, the lyrics.
The opening band was a great companion to Shearwater's act. Hospital Ships has a soft mellow sound that is accompanied by comical lyrics in a perfect balance. The wistful nature of Hospital Ships' music reminded me of a soft breeze. Each song made you smile at its beauty. My favorite song was one inspired by a hangover, which captured reality in a humorous way. Though I don’t recall what the song is called I’m sure it can be found on their new CD that came out the 21st of October. I’ll leave you with one part of the song that has stuck with me: "The bathroom floor is where we fall asleep. The shots we take are too small for me."
