Live: Fleet Foxes

[ED. NOTE: This is just getting out of control. This is the fourth time in the last month that a post has been deleted by Blogger without warning. Here it is again, without the MP3s. How obnoxious.]

Fleet Foxes. October 6th, 2008 at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA. Words by Erik Lund.
Monday night Fleet Foxes brought their harmony filled brand of country-tinged folk rock to the beautiful Somerville Theater, according to them their first seated theater show ever. However the venue was perfect for the band with its classical styling and superb sound quality. Much blog talk about the band’s incredible live show proved very true for everyone in the sold out crowd. Each member locks in with each other impeccably; creating a beautifully nuanced wall of sound from one of the most fully realized live bands currently out there. They filled the theater with such a dynamic and a cohesive sound that truly showcased each member’s talents. The band opened the show with a heart melting four part harmony, which I don’t think we have seen the likes of in a rock band since the Beach Boys. Throughout the rest of the set including just about every song off their debut album and one new song, the perfect vocal harmonies continued to seduce audience members, as one person yelled out “You guys are beautiful,” to which lead man Robin Pecknold awkwardly played with his hair and humbly replied, “Thanks, I don’t feel beautiful.” To this I should mention that Fleet Foxes are also one of the most humorous live bands with their between song banter and audience interaction, as the crowd erupted in laughter countless times. Fleet Foxes brought it all, fluttery guitar finger picking, tight bass, whirly organ and expressive drum grooves. Not to mention the three solo songs Robin performed, one of which was even unplugged as he belted into the silently attentive theater with his flawlessly hearty but gritty singing voice. It was amazing to hear the sheer excitement and appreciation in the crowd’s applause at the end of each song. This band knows who they are and how to show it off with an impressively strong live show. Go see Fleet Foxes.
