Words by Erik Lund.

Englishman Jeremy Warmsley is a singer/songwriter who utilizes a quirky blend of folk and electronic music to create melodic pop songs. Recently Mr. Warmsley released his second album, How We Became, which showcases some of his most interesting electronic work and songwriting to date. This collection of songs is peppered with intricate drum machine grooves as well as clever synth manipulation -- see title track, "How We Became". Part of Warmsley’s unique sound comes from his strange nasally boyish voice which provides a very personal quality to his vocal delivery. There is a strong presence of complex vocal harmonies on How We Became that seem to be new territory for Warmsley’s songwriting and are often reminiscent of Of Montreal’s Kevin Barns’ vocal harmony flourishes. He writes songs based mostly on people’s stories, covering the likes of relationships and strange adventures. All this talk of the albums strong presence of electronics is not to say there aren’t some great guitar and piano songs. For instance, "15 Broken Swords" has a quirky funk guitar lick with a choppy rhythm, while "Craneflies" showcases a smooth piano ballad with an intense build of arpeggios. Warmsley does a great job at exploring all sorts of different styles on this album as each song is quite different from the next while still maintaining cohesion. Warmsley's songwriting is a very refreshing look at pop songs, although watch out for the cheesy saxophone section in "Dancing With The Enemy". If you are new to Warmsley be sure to check out of his debut album The Art Of Fiction which is filled with some of my favorite songs of his and some really fresh and exciting songwriting.
