Deerhoof, longtime favorites of mine, have a new album coming out tomorrow. It's called Offend Maggie, and will be released via Kill Rock Stars. It's hard for me to review a Deerhoof record without comparing it to their past work, since I've listened to their older albums so many times. For instance, as I listened through to Offend Maggie, I couldn't help but think that it sounded more reminiscent of The Runners Four than Friend Opportunity. Personally, I think that's a good thing. The band sounds more mature here, or as mature as Deerhoof let themselves be. Deerhoof are a growing organism, and their sound grows and changes with each album. Here, on their ninth studio album, they sound just as creative and energized as always. They've still got some silly songs filled with goofy lyrics (see "Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back"), and they've still got some rocking dissonant sound collages. It's not quite as poppy as Friend Opportunity, but it's still just as experimental and exciting. Deerhoof continue to surprise me, and Offend Maggie is quite the pleasant surprise.Deerhoof - Buck And Judy (from Offend Maggie)
