Of Montreal (Have A New Album)

The ever-prolific Kevin Barnes continues to expand Of Montreal's catalog with the upcoming release of their ninth studio album in the last 11 years, Skeletal Lamping. As I listened through to the album, I made my judgments fairly quickly. Musically, this is classic Of Montreal material, very similar to Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer. It's filled to the brim with bouncy, energetic beats and glam-rock grooves, not to mention Barnes signature vocal harmonies. Lyrically, however, this album finds Barnes letting loose on sexuality like never before. Sure, Of Montreal have always been a fairly sexually-orientated band at times. But these lyrics are no holds barred in a way that may put some listeners off. For example, "St. Exquisite's Confessions" starts off with a retro, classic Of Montreal feel, and I loved it at first. And then the vocals kick in: "I'm so sick of sucking the dick of this cruel, cruel city." Lines like that are just the tip of the iceberg, surrounded with other absurdly explicit lines such as "I wanna make you cum 200 times a day" or "I want you to be my pleasure puss, I want to know what it's like to be inside you" or "we can do it soft-core if you want, but you should know I take it both ways." Well...you get the picture. The lyrics can be a bit much at times, but if you can get past that, it's a great album. This is classic Of Montreal -- everything locks in and grooves in that way that only Barnes and company can pull off. It's a fun album; I would just recommend listening to it on your own before you play it in the background with your friends. "Want to make you ejaculate 'til it's no longer fun" could make the party a little awkward. But then again, if you dig Of Montreal, it's likely that you'll be open to the new lyrical territory. Explicitly vulgar or not, this is a great album, and it's worth a listen.

Skeletal Lamping will be released October 7th via Polyvinyl.
