Last Thursday was free college night at the Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston, featuring two sets of music from St. Vincent. Annie Clark and her band played with ferocity and energy the entire night, tearing through songs off her debut album, Marry Me. The crowd was also treated to an awesome new song, tentatively called "Trills". During the first set, we also got to hear one song of solo Annie Clark, in which she busted out "Dig A Pony" (just like the last time she played Boston). And just like last time, it was badass. She performs like a seasoned pro, so invested in her performance and playing guitar flawlessly and charismatically. The setting was rather interesting for a rock show, with the make-shift stage set up in the museum's courtyard. Somehow, it all worked pretty good. The second set had a slightly chattier and rowdier crowd, but sometimes that can't be avoided. I'm glad I went to both sets, since the early one was so attentive. When brilliant violinist Daniel Hart ended a song with quiet beauty, you could hear the adoration in the silence, before the eruption of appluase. The first set did suffer from an early cutoff, however, which seemed rather strange. With only one song left on their set list, they were told that they had to stop. You know those museum people, so strict with their timetables... All told, it was a stellar evening, and I thank the Museum of Fine Arts and St. Vincent for the [free and excellent] show. And for those who are really paying attention, you may recognize Annie's new drummer -- Adam Sturtevant, also of Via Audio.
