Good Music In Good Films: I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

Now that I've vented about A Skin, A Night, let's talk about what a good music documentary should be like. It should be well shot, contain lots of commentary and insightful interviews, show the band at work recording, contain live performances, characterize the members of the band, capture great stories on film, and -- most of all -- be about stellar music and musicians. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart satisfies all of these requirements. It's a documentary about Wilco, filmed while they were recording their landmark album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. And it is exceptional. It manages to capture an amazing amount of key moments in Wilco's history -- the reactions when the band was dropped from their record label, their banishment of Jay Bennett from Wilco (and the prior indications that he no longer meshed with the other members). This film captures a defining moment in Wilco's history. I know it's kind of cheating to write about a music documentary for my "Good Music In Good Films" feature, but I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is too good to pass up.Wilco - Ashes Of American Flags (from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
