After teasing us all by saying that his new album would be out "sometime in the next few weeks," Girl Talk officially released his fourth record yesterday, called Feed The Animals. I love listening to mash-up albums for the first time. It's so much fun to hear samples pop out at you, making you raise your eyebrows and smile as you hear a favorite song. Really, I'm listening to the album right now in a quiet lounge in between two summer school classes -- and I'm sure people are curious about my constant head bobbing and chuckles. The album starts strongly with "Gimme Some Lovin' " in the background, after a short introduction of the Unicorns' drum beat from "I Was Born (A Unicorn)." Some other samples that made me laugh out loud: Queen, Radiohead, Heart's "Magic Man" (!), the Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys, Nirvana, etc. While it's a fun listen, I do think Night Ripper is considerably better. There are several moments on Feed The Animals where things just don't lock in completely, such as the Metallica sample and the Cardigans' "Lovefool" (which I dearly love!). There are also the inevitable mash-up moments where the key signatures contrast harshly, but it's minimal -- and this won't bother you unless you're a musician. Still, it's a great Girl Talk album.
Feed The Animals is available for download as of yesterday, from Illegal Art's website. He's taking the pay-what-you-want-via-the-internet route, including the $0 option. But, he wants to know why you're not going to pay for it. Your options are:
Gotta love that, right? Whether you're going to pay for it or not, I suggest you go listen to Feed The Animals right now.
I may donate later
I can’t afford to pay
I don’t really like Girl Talk
I don’t believe in paying for music
I have already purchased this album
I don’t value music made from sampling
I am part of the press, radio, or music industry

I don't necessarily think of it as better or worse than Night Ripper but a different approach to his ever-developing genre.
Unstoppable Greg Gillis, Night Ripper Greg Gillis and Feed the Animals Greg Gillis are all different people and with each installment he gets better with his production.
Anyway you look at it, it is a decent album and I am certainly glad it is out finally!
I'm with you on the first time mash up experience. You always have the eager "what's he gonna mash up next" thing going on. It makes for a really fun record at first, but I think it makes it more difficult to create a sustainable mash up record that holds up over time. I admit I hardly listen to Night Ripper or Unstoppable anymore. Once the nostalgia wears off, I move on to something else.
I really like your blog. I posted a link to your blog from mine, so I'll be checking back frequently.
Thanks man, I really appreciate that.
I will do the same to you, have a good one.
Justin -- Um, assuming your comment was directed to me (and not Manley), thanks. A link back is the least I can do.
Well isn't this awkward...
It's like the Internet equilivent of someone waving to someone else on the street and you think it was meant for you...
le oops
No harm done. It was directed towards you, Keith. But Manley, it allowed me to check out your blog as well. That might be an amusing and successful way to get people to come to your blog. Find comments from people complementing others and act like you think it was about you. It worked for me. :)
We all gotta have some kind of schtick don't we...
In all honesty, I found your page Keith through Hype Machine and, truth be known, I didn't see a name. So when I saw the comment from Justin, I thought it was from the owner of the blog not another commenter...
Sorry, it was an honest, yet incredibly sheepish mistake... No hard feelings? I'm not some kind of egotistical comment stealing bastard I swear...
