My introduction to Daedelus was his work with the Weather, a hip-hop band comprised of himself and rappers Busdriver and Radioinactive. I loved the production on that album, so I ventured into his solo work. Denies The Day's Demise is the first album I heard, and it was definitely the right one to start with. Amidst the many (10+) albums and EPs he has released, it's his best work. The beats are tight and lock in with great, creative sample choices. Daedelus samples a lot of great music, especially on Denies The Day's Demise, which features quite a few samba samples, such as the classic Brazilian artist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Hearing Jobim mixed in with contemporary beats made me smile wide the first time I heard it.Daedelus has a new record coming out July 15th via Ninja Tune, called Love To Make Music To. While I feel it shows his growth as an artist, I'm not digging the album as much as Denies The Day's Demise. On his earlier albums, the beats don't quite lock in, leaving you wishing for more closure. This doesn't happen at all on his new album -- but, at the same time, the beats have less ingenuity. I still prefer the happy medium of Denies The Day's Demise, and that's where I recommend a new listener to start.
