We Are Scientists (Have A New Record)

We Are Scientists new album is called Brain Thrust Mastery, and it was released March 17th. When I first heard it a few weeks ago, I was completely and utterly put off. The whole album is drenched in layers of synths, and I really don't think it suits We Are Scientists' style. I pine for the production of their first album, where it was just a tight trio rocking along. It seemed to me, at first, as if this new album was much more of a boring mainstream pop record than With Love And Squalor, their debut. I kept trying to listen to the album, but I could never make it all the way through. I would skip tracks in disgust, sending out unmanageable sighs. After several listens to the album, I deleted it. No good, I decided. But a few days later, I found myself singing songs from the record, songs stuck in my head. I decided if that could happen, I should really give it another chance. And it seems to me that I have finally gotten into it. I still believe With Love And Squalor is a better album, and I don't think the production style of Brain Thrust Mastery is well-suited for We Are Scientists, but the songwriting is still catchy and enjoyable. The production may put some off at first, but give it a listen. It's better than it seems. We Are Scientists - Ghouls (from Brain Thrust Mastery)
We Are Scientists - Tonight (from Brain Thrust Mastery)
We Are Scientists - Worth The Wait (from With Love And Squalor)
We Are Scientists - Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt (from With Love And Squalor)

Thats a fairly accurate description of how many have taken to Brain Thrust Mastery.
Myself included.
If you're missing the previous works of We Are Scientists but have listened to With Love And Squalor too many times I suggest acquiring Crap Attack, their B-sides, Remixes and Rarities album.
There are some duds on there, but also some very notable tracks.
These guys are nerds, who just happen to be musical nerds. Seems to me everything they do is tounge-in-cheek anyway. Last album they played three-chord power-pop, now they want to play synth-pop. Go them! (Espcially if they keep making Lonely Island videos!)
And is everyone unaware that WAS had several releases BEFORE With Love and Squalor? I say Safety, Fun, And Learning (In That Order) is actually a pretty good album, all things considered...
