Live: Stephen Malkmus and John Vanderslice

John Vanderslice opened up the night with his usual spark and flare. Of the three times I have seen him, I think this may have been the best. He was in fine form, and every member of his backing band was right along with him. I've written about JV's live show twice before, so I'll keep this brief. It was great music played by some strong musicians. Everything I've said before holds true to this show; it was an excellent set.Headliner Stephen Malkmus came out with a subtle stage presence, something he would maintain throughout the whole show. Throughout the show, he generally just stood with his back halfway to the audience and apathetically played. He didn't ever really seem to get into it, but that would appear to be his style. The music was played rather haphazardly, sloppy and messy. But once again, this is Stephen Malkmus, and that's his style. Nevertheless, I wasn't that into the live show. It was partly due to this dry atmosphere, which did not thrill me, and partly due to the setlist. Malkmus' latest album, Real Emotional Trash, is his worst solo effort yet. It's not horrible, but I never would have given it a chance if it didn't have Stephen Malkmus' name on it -- it's less than stellar, especially in comparison to his first three solo albums. At this show, he played every single song off the new album except for "Elmo Delmo". As one might imagine, this doesn't leave room for much else. I'm sure he's excited about the new album and all, but that's a bit much. Baby c'mon! He's got some classic songs off his earlier albums, and I wish he'd just thrown the audience a bone by playing a few more of them. Throughout the night, I felt similar to how I feel about Real Emotional Trash. It was alright, but I was just bored the whole time. There was simply never anything too exciting happening, and by the end of the hour and a half set, I was more than ready to go home.
