This music is immediate, for lack of a better word. It grabs you with its intensity and dense texture of sound. I could never get into Dirty Projectors' music, but their latest release, Rise Above, is their best album yet. It's a cover of Black Flag's 1981 album Damaged, but not in any way one could imagine. It's as if frontman Dave Longstreth wrote all of the covers without ever having listened to the original album, completely changing the settings for the angst-ridden lyrics. Now they sit atop bouncy orchestration and quirky, glitchy guitar playing. These are not standard song structures, to say the least. Sometimes the style of Dirty Projectors can be a bit much -- but when you're into it, it's genius.Dirty Projectors - No More (from Rise Above)
