Good Music In Good Films: Dedication

As I was standing in Blockbuster, scrutinizing Dedication, I thought to myself, "Why is this movie on my list, exactly? A romantic comedy starring Mandy Moore?" As I scanned the credits on the box, I was reminded why. "Music by Deerhoof." Oh yeah, cool. So I rented it. Well, I am oh-so-glad that Deerhoof's music was involved, because otherwise it is likely I wouldn't have ever seen this wonderful flick. Before the movie started, I was skeptical, but that may have only been due to the fact that I had seen Dan In Real Life the night before, which turned out to be a very crappy romantic comedy featuring music by Sondre Lerche. Thankfully, with Dedication, Deerhoof's music was done justice much more so than Sondre Lerche's in Dan In Real Life. Unlike most past installments of Good Music In Good Films, Dedication does not have a composed score. The music used in the film is mostly taken from contemporary rock, and it suits the mood well throughout. There are some interesting moments of glitchy film, and it lines up so well to the music that it feels like an artsy music video. The camera work is a wonderful balance between interesting cinematography and avant-garde film techniques. But none of that distracts from the humor and grace of the story and its characters. It's a highly enjoyable movie chock-full of indie rock. What's not to love? All of the music below was used in the film. And this is only about half of it.
Deerhoof - Hark The Umpire (from Reveille)
Deerhoof - Our Angel's Ululu (from Reveille)
Deerhoof - That Big Orange Sun Run Over Speed Light (from Milk Man)
Deerhoof - Matchbook Seeks Maniac (from Friend Opportunity)
Joanna Newsom - Bridges And Balloons (from The Milk-Eyed Mender)
The Strokes - Ask Me Anything (from First Impressions Of Earth)
Au Revoir Simone - Stay Golden (from Verses Of Comfort, Assurance, & Salvation)
