Last Thursday night saw Keren Ann and company opening up their tour with Dean & Britta here in Boston. I was sad to see that she did not have the phenomenal trumpet player that was in tow with her last last time -- but just as Vanderslice was without that violinist -- it didn't stop it from being a great show. The songs were beautiful and breath-taking, and they captured me throughout the entire set. Although old favorites, such as "Not Going Anywhere", were just as magnificent as always, the high points of the set truly came when they were playing material off of the latest record. Perhaps it was because the fresh music was what the band was most excited about, or perhaps it was because some of the new tunes are more apt to a full band sound -- whatever the reason, those songs were taken to a new level. The audience was quite receptive, giving a standing ovation at the conclusion of their set. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Keren Ann should have been the opener.Keren Ann - Not Going Anywhere (from Not Going Anywhere)
