See that picture up there? Soon there will be a fourth member once more in the mighty Deerhoof. Last week Pitchfork reported that Ed Rodriguez will be joining the group on guitar, opening the possibilities up once more. Deerhoof have a way of always managing to blow me away, so I can't wait to see how this changes things. As I've mentioned in the past, Deerhoof are my absolute favorite band. They have enjoyed this status for many years now, and I don't predict that changing anytime soon. I have an endless number of favorite songs that I could post, so I really don't even know where to begin. Last week on the BIRN, I played and subsequently posted two outstanding tracks from 2005's The Runners Four, which is likely Deerhoof's most focused and accessible album to date. So, having sampled that album slightly, here's a taste of another era in their discography: 2003's Apple O'. These songs are much more jagged, and the performances are so powerfully raucous. This remains my favorite Deerhoof record, and that says a lot.Deerhoof - Heart Failure (from Apple O')
Deerhoof - The Forbidden Fruits (from Apple O')
