Just as P.T. Anderson is getting an enormous amount of buzz for There Will Be Blood, I thought I would mention his last film, 2002's Punch-Drunk Love. I would be writing about his new film, but I haven't seen it yet. Don't worry, it's on the to-do list -- in fact, as Jonny Greenwood scored the film, it is likely you will be seeing a post on it sometime in the future. In any case, back to the topic at hand. Punch-Drunk Love is a wonderfully quirky love story, full of grace and humor, starring Adam Sandler. I originally wanted to see the film merely out of curiosity to as to whether or not Adam Sandler could actually act. And, surprise, he can. Although he was known at the time for playing silly, not-so-bright characters in goofy movies best enjoyed by middle schoolers, he pulled out a magnificent performance in Punch-Drunk Love as a strange, shy character. The small acting cast is magnificent, highlighting Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Luis Guzman. The cinematography is simply breathtaking as well, with many, many shots where you can't help but say to yourself, "Well! That was cool." And, to top it all off, the film is scored by Jon Brion. Jon Brion, as I've said in the past, does excellent work. Here, he writes bouncy, quirky music that matches the energy of the story impeccably. It's an artistic masterpiece that is immensely enjoyable to watch, and it stands as my second favorite film (behind Donnie Darko).Jon Brion - Third Floor Hallway (from Punch-Drunk Love)
