Good Music In Good Films: Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko has been, since the day I saw it, my all-time favorite film -- I love it. It is a complete masterpiece in all aspects of the word, and I have nothing but the greatest of admiration for it's stunning story, acting, cinematography, and music. The music is comprised of several tunes from the 1980s (as that is when the story takes place), interspliced with Michael Andrews' magnificent score. Among the 1980s tunes are Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon", and a breath-taking cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World" by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews. Andrews' compositions for the film are incredibly key to making it as a powerful of a movie as it is. His abstract, unique score acts an integral part, connecting flawlessly with the other aspects of the film. If you have not seen Donnie Darko, it comes highly recommended by me. One word of caution: rent the director's cut, not the American version. The film was originally released in England in it's original context, but they shortened it when it came to America. Having seen both versions of the film, I can say with certainty that the extra minutes are essential, and they make the director's cut the definitive version.Michael Andrews - Manipulated Living (from Donnie Darko)

I'm glad you spoke about the music on Tuesday because while it's apparent how great the film is, I forgot how good the music is too.
I agree with everything You say - just been recommending the film for a group of friends as THE film to see. And I just love the music, the score and the songs. I, though, recommended the producer/version. Director's cut "narrows" the film down by explaining things, and... I. Like. Mystery. A matter of tastes I think.
