5. MAPS & ATLASES - TREES, SWALLOWS, HOUSESChicago's own Maps & Atlases bring some excellent math rock to the table. Here we have some kids who really know how to play quick tapping notes on a guitar, and they like to make use of that fact. If the lead singer's voice doesn't bother you (and who are we kidding, not having the perfect voice has never stopped me from liking a band before), then it should be easy to get into their complex, intricate songs.

4. VOXTROT - MOTHERS, SISTERS, DAUGHTERS & WIVESVoxtrot, having already won me over with their debut self-titled EP, continued their streak of excellence with Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives. These five songs are all well-crafted -- some of Voxtrot's best work yet.

3. THE LITTLE ONES - SING SONGI had never heard of The Little Ones until I saw them open up for Voxtrot, but they won me over immediately with a high energy, all-smiles, fun set. And, oh yeah, the music's good too. It's superb pop/rock, with colorful melodies and full band cheers. I look forward to hearing a full-length debut from these guys.

2. DEVOTCHKA - CURSE YOUR LITTLE HEARTDevotchka have been churning out plenty of great music since they began, but this, while it consists of mostly covers, is some of there best work yet. To start, the production is miles ahead of their previous work -- these recordings simply sound better. The violin work sounds so much more elegant, and their style of music really shines through all the interesting cover choices.

1. TOKYO POLICE CLUB - A LESSON IN CRIMEOn their debut EP, Tokyo Police Club capture energy and fun quite excellently. While it's a short 20 minute blast through 7 songs, there are enough hooks on here to keep any hipster satisfied. The EP is not the most musically complex work to grace my year-end lists, but it may be one of the most fun and enjoyable. Sometimes, it's best just to keep it simple. And here, Tokyo Police Club prove why that is.
